SWFPO had the privilege of hosting Daniel Zeichner MP, the newly appointed UK Fisheries Minister, in Brixham last week. Remarkably, this visit occurred just three days into his new role, demonstrating his commitment to engaging with the fishing industry from the outset.

Accompanied by our CEO, Juliette Hatchman, Minister Zeichner toured Brixham’s bustling fish quay and visited the market operated by Brixham Trawler Agents. The visit provided an opportunity for the Minister to witness the heart of the fishing industry, engage with various stakeholders and discuss critical matters that are currently impacting the industry.

During his visit, Minister Zeichner delved into several crucial industry topics namely food security, marine spatial squeeze, economic growth, vessel modernisation, and the need to seize Brexit opportunities to benefit the UK fishing industry. The Minister emphasised that “food security is national security, and a sustainable fishing industry is a key part of that” and expressed a desire to actively seek input from those on the ground. His desire to collaborate closely with the fishing community and its leaders was evident. As Secretary for State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Steve Reed MP shares this commitment, there’s a genuine opportunity to drive positive change.
SWFPO members warmly received Minister Zeichner and look forward to working closely with him over the coming years. His visit reaffirms the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and shared goals in shaping the future of UK fisheries.
